There is a darkness to the joy

A dissonance to harmony and fear within the smile that never leaves

But this is part of all that gleams

Part of the urgency and fire that haunts the dream

And I would always have it so

Waking within the dawn and watching through the night

Because the other life is pale and far behind

And no comparison with these depths now

I cannot turn back nor go on with ease

Intensity is sharp and sometimes chill

And often feels too harsh and sad for me

But then delight that I can taste

As freshness, zest and vigour in my mouth

Shines as the other side of all the trudge

And, having tasted, I, addicted to this call

Want more and more

Walk on and on

And lean into the joyful dark
