Child

By Sebastian Temlett

Have you checked everywhere?
Where did you leave it last?
Buried deep, tightly clenched
Beneath your heart?

The doctor says there’s nothing wrong
The doctor says
Nothing
To do with if I am all right

Keep sweeping
Dusting down
The layers
To the rusted veins ’til they
Burst
Gasping for air

Perhaps you’ll find it there
Death Clasped,
Afraid and blind?
But let this be a lesson, child,
To not leave things
Where you can’t find them
